Why choose Music?

At Junior Cycle Level...

Students learn about the basics of music theory and history, how to compose a melody, respond to music they are hearing and improve their performing skills on their chosen instrument (or pick one up!)

The new Junior Cycle Music Course allows students to explore music making through Classroom Based Assessments in melody writing and music research. It teaches them about music recording techniques as well as copyright laws and everything in between.

At Senior Cycle Level..

Leaving Cert music equips students with advanced theory in responding to music as well as composition. In the Leaving Cert course students study 4 set works from different eras which is examined in the written section along with Irish Music and general listening skills. In the composition paper, students learn how to develop melodies, write their own to lyrics and provide chordal harmony to a melody line.

One of the main advantages to choosing music at senior cycle is the practical element worth 50% of their overall result. Students can choose from a variety of activities including performing solo or in a group, conducting and music technology.

Practicals usually take place before or after the Easter holidays meaning students know they have completed 50% of their exam prior to June!

And Beyond...

Music at both Junior and Senior Cycle equip students with lifelong skills whether they pursue music to higher education, keep up their instrument as a hobby or go into the professional music scene.
